Fairfield police on lookout for cemetery vandals
Fairfield police are looking for the vandals who knocked over more than a dozen headstones at Beth El Cemetery twice within the past week.
Police are asking residents who live along Reid Street, where the cemetery is located, to keep their eyes open.
Twenty tombstones were knocked over in the Jewish cemetery, leaving some to wonder whether or not the vandalism was an anti-Semitic gesture. However, police say they have no evidence to suggest there is any bias behind the incident.
Caretakers say the actions are not only disrespectful, but they also cost money and manpower. Rabbi Mosha Epstein said affected families have been crushed by the incidents.
Fairfield police said they will not rest until the vandals are caught and the cemetery is restored.
Those with information are urged to call Fairfield police at 254-4800.
