Westport mailing mess fuels identity theft fears
(06/25/07) WESTPORT ? A major tax bill snafu in Westport has some residents worrying about identity theft.
About 30,000 tax bills were sent to the wrong addresses. The Westport Tax Collector?s Office blames the postal problem on a Waterbury-based company that apparently had trouble with its address-verification process. Many residents now wonder who exactly could be looking at their personal information.
?They could steal your identity maybe.? resident Carl Muller said. ??anything out of line worries me.?
Representatives of the tax collector?s office say if residents receive the wrong bill, they should cross out the person?s name and write ?return to sender? on the envelope.
