Studies: Herbal supplements help battle cancer

Two clinical studies on herbal supplements showed promising results when it comes to treating cancer.

Some cancer patients credit ginseng to their boost in energy. A study shows ginseng helps cancer patients fight fatigue. However, Dr. Andrea Ruskin, of Norwalk, said the findings are not concrete. ?Traditionally, the problem is supplements are not FDA-approved,? Ruskin said. ?So there?s not any hardcore science behind their use.?

Another clinical study showed flax seeds pack a powerful ability to fight prostate cancer. Doctors said patients who took the flax seeds seemed to have slower growth of their prostate cancer cells.

Ruskin recommends cancer patients talk to their doctors before taking any herbal supplements. According to Ruskin, supplements have actually interfered with chemotherapy response in certain cases.
