Parishioner: Disgraced Darien priest wants handout
Father Michael Fay of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Darien was accused a year ago of stealing more than a million dollars from his church, and some parishioners say he is asking for help paying his legal fees.
Investigators believe Fay spent close to $1.5 million of church money over six years while he was head priest. Vito Colucci, the first investigator to look into the theft, confirms that the former priest spent the money on jewelry, high-end cars, elaborate vacations and furnishing an apartment for his apparent gay lover.
One parishioner, who wished to remain anonymous, has come forward and said she saw a letter signed by Fay asking for money. It is believed Fay sent the letter to a few select worshippers.
Colucci said he would like to get his hands on the letter. ?I'd love to see it and see how it's worded, of course. But what's so amazing is that people will help him, and he's never apologized,? he said.
The spokesperson from the Catholic Diocese said the diocese had no knowledge of the letter, and had no comment on the matter.
