Bridgeport murders reach record-high number in 2006

The city of Bridgeport recorded 30 murders in 2006, which is the highest number of homicides among Connecticut?s cities.
Bridgeport Police Chief Bryan Norwood says the 30 murders also represent the most murders Bridgeport has seen in one year. Police say in about half of the homicides, the victim knew the attacker. Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi adds that the rate of domestic violence-related murders is also up.
Norwood says police will find new strategies to bring the number of homicides down in 2007. He adds the department will continue its community police effort. Meanwhile, detectives say 18 of the 30 murders have been solved. Norwood says detectives expect to wrap up another six in the coming months.
