Soldiers from Stratford brace for possible deployment

Lt. Col. Cmdr. Mike Vasile of the 242nd Engineer Battalion in Stratford spent Friday morning fielding calls after reports of a possible Stratford deployment surfaced in the media. The U.S. is in its second phase of Iraqi Freedom, and Connecticut's National Guard is preparing for possible deployment should more soldiers be called up for post war occupation duty. If the Department of Defense demand more U.S. troops, Major John Whitford says the National Guard units would be called based on the needs of the combatant commander. Of the 5,000 members of the Connecticut National Guard, Major John Whitford says 3,000 are available for deployment.
