Bridgeport police officer is shot after car accident and chase

A police chase in Bridgeport turned into a violent shoot out Tuesday night. It all started when Bridgeport police identified a minivan with stolen license plates near Federal and Madison avenues. According to officials the van and police were then involved in a low speed chase that ended at the Chopsey Hill extension and Island Brook. That's when the stolen van hit a passenger car stopped at a traffic light. Police say the suspect, 30-year-old Shawn McDaniel, tried to flee the accident scene but authorities were able to block his escape. A struggle then ensued and McDaniel was shot four times; three in the chest, once in the shoulder. He is in critical condition at St. Vincent's Medical Center. Officer Jeffrey Long suffered a gunshot wound to the ankle.Police say McDaniel of West Haven has a long criminal history, including 18 prior arrests for robbery, drugs and issuing bad checks.
