Milford Fire Department rules community center fire was deliberately set
(08/25/03) MILFORD - The fire marshal's investigation into Saturday's fire at the Margaret Egan Center in Milford confirms the blaze was set, according to Milford Mayor James Richetelli. He says most of the damage happened in the center of the facility, where the old and new buildings joined. According to the report there are no electrical outlets in that area, ruling out natural causes.
With that part of the investigation solved and the structure of the building deemed safe, crews have been given the go-ahead to start cleaning up the debris left behind by the fire.
While most of the problems were contained to the center of the facility, extensive water and smoke damage is making it impossible for more than a dozen organizations that run programs in the center to operate.
Richetelli says his staff has found temporary locations for most of the organizations that operate full time out of the center. The staff is also working to find places for the smaller organizations that meet twice a week or on a monthly basis.
The Milford police detective division is continuing its investigation to determine exactly what and who started this fire. Meanwhile, Milford Fire Department officials ruled the fire was set on purpose.
