Bpt. absentee ballots miss mailing deadline; will be available Wednesday

(08/19/03) BRIDGEPORT - Some Bridgeport voters say the city is violating their right to vote. A state law requires absentee ballots to be made available to the public 21 days before any primary. But the Bridgeport Mayoral Primary was 21 days from Tuesday. Tuesday came and went, and the ballots were not yet mailed out. They were still at the printers.

Bridgeport Town Clerk Hector Diaz says a number of reasons are to blame including last week's blackout and the fact that the list of candidates was not finalized until Friday afternoon.

Some college students say they wanted to pick up and fill out the ballot on Tuesday before they left for school. The group of college students contacted the state and filed a complaint.

Diaz says the ballots will be available first thing Wednesday morning.
