Gas line explodes near police headquarters in Westport; one hurt

(08/18/03) WESTPORT - A gas line exploded Monday afternoon in the parking lot behind the Westport police department headquarters on Jesup Road.

A contractor tore open a natural gas line while preparing to repave the parking lot. Fire fighters say this could have been much worse. George Courser, 45, from Granby was operating the machine. He was treated and released from Bridgeport Hospital with first and second degree burns from the ball of fire that erupted.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are investigating the accident, and Southern Connecticut Gas Company workers will see whether the gas line was properly marked.
