Governor Rowland approves state budget

(08/17/03) HARTFORD - Governor John Rowland beat the midnight deadline and signed the $27.5 billion state budget late Saturday night.

The Senate passed all four of the so-called "implementation bills" that spell out details of the budget. However, the House dragged its feet as it continued to debate a fourth catchall bill. In the end though, the two-year, $27 billion budget was officially signed at 11 p.m. at the governor's residence on Bantam Lake.

The budget process still is not over just yet. Lawmakers still need to address some bonding bills to control school construction and prison overcrowding. They plan to meet to discuss those bills on September 3.
