CT ready for last tax-free shopping week

(08/12/03) MILFORD - State lawmakers eliminated the tax-free week beginning next year, so this year you can still go on a shopping spree and save the sales tax.

The event amounts to a state sponsored 6 percent discount on clothing and footwear costing as much a $300. The week costs the state as much as $3 million a year in lost sales tax revenue, so it was a victim of state budget cuts.

Tax-free week begins Sunday, August 17 and runs through Saturday, August 23. The shoppers News 12 Connecticut spoke to say the discount could make a real difference, especially with back-to-school shopping on the itinerary.
