Starbucks moves in on local shops' turf

(08/08/03) NORWALK - Seattle-based coffee king Starbucks has opened up shop in Norwalk, and some locally owned stores are concerned about what it could do to their business.

Starbucks has about 6,000 coffee shops across North America, and 35 in southwestern Connecticut. The new Norwalk shop is located on Post Road, and the company is considering opening up more in the area. However, the possibility of the java giant expanding even more is worrying local coffee shop owners.

Starbucks says a quality local coffee shop doesn't have to worry about the competition. They claim that chain stores like Starbucks help turn more people into coffee consumers, and that helps all coffee shops. They point to New Haven, where many independent coffee shops opened after Starbucks came to town, cashing in on the success the world-famous chain created.
