Cops urge caution near Trumbull mall

(08/05/03) TRUMBULL - Two recent alleged sexual assaults have Trumbull police warning teenagers to be alert while shopping at the mall.

Police reported a 21-year-old man raped a 15-year-old girl and molested a 12-year-old in the woods outside the Westfield Shoppingtown Mall in Trumbull on Friday. Trumbull police said they have the man responsible for the crimes in custody.

They also stress that crimes like this are very rare, but they want to make sure teens take the right steps to remain safe. Their advice is to stay in a group, and if folks think they are in danger, they should get away quickly. Police are also encouraging parents not to drop kids off at the mall for hours. They said parents should continually talk to their children about the dangers of talking with strangers.
