Ferries on list of potential targets
(08/04/03) BRIDGEPORT - In preparation for the possibility of new attacks on America, U.S. officials have added ferries to the list of potential terrorist targets. Security is already being beefed up at ferries in Connecticut, and operators say they aren't taking any chances.
The Harbor Master at Bridgeport Ferry says they received a general alert late last week. The national terrorism alert level has not been elevated, but the Harbor Master says they continue to work at an elevated level of security every day, and are always prepared.
Despite the warnings and added security, many passengers on local ferries aren't very concerned, saying the ferries would not be prime targets for terrorists.
The Bridgeport Harbor Master says they are checking not only passengers and vehicles that board the ferry, but all boats on the water and bridges as well. He says random personal checks are voluntary, but if those who refuse inspections will not be allowed to board the ferry.
