Ceremony honors local military hero

(08/03/03) NORWALK - On the first Sunday of each month, a flag raising ceremony at American Legion Post 12 honors deceased veterans from past wars. But this month's ceremony also paid tribute to Norwalk's first soldier killed in the line of duty since 1969.

Army specialist Wilfredo Perez Jr. was killed in Iraq on July 26. The 24-year-old was killed during a grenade attack while guarding a children's hospital outside Baghdad. Perez was part of the ROTC program at Norwalk High School, and many former classmates went to the ceremony to pay tribute to their fallen friend. Several soldiers just back from Iraq also showed up to honor their comrade.

Perez lived with his father and stepmother in Norwalk before joining the Army. His mother lives in Queens. A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday at St. Matthias Church in the Ridgewood section of Queens. A second memorial service is still being planned for Norwalk.
