Funeral next week for Norwalk soldier

(08/02/03) NORWALK - A Norwalk man, killed while serving in Iraq, will be laid to rest next week in Queens. A wake will be held for 24-year-old Pfc. Wildredo Perez, Jr. on Wednesday and Thursday in Middle Village. The funeral will follow on Friday.

Perez was one of three soldiers killed last week in Baghdad while guarding a children's hospital. Perez, along with Sgt. Daniel Methvin of Texas and Spc. Jonathan Barnes of Missouri, died when a grenade was thrown from the window of the hospital.

Perez' funeral will take place Friday at 11:30 a.m., at the St. Matthias Church in the Ridgewood section of Queens. A second memorial service is being planned for Norwalk several days later, but exact the details of when and where have not yet been released.
