Local children take to the water

(08/02/03) RIVERSIDE - It may not have been perfect sailing weather, but that didn't stop more than 80 youngsters from heading to Captain's Harbor on the Long Island Sound for the Optimist Sailing Regatta.

Eager young sailors from 9 to 14 years old competed in the Opti Open at the Riverside Yacht Club on Saturday afternoon. The future mariners were sailing in boats called "The Optimist." The boat is about nine feet long, weighs about 77 pounds, and only requires one sailor.

Despite several delays and a lack of wind, the kids were glad to add to their racing experience, and to meet new people at the event. Some of the sailors will be competing in the Junior Sailing Association's Long Island Sound Championships, which will take place August 11 and 12 at the American Yacht Club in Rye, New York.
