Pinto headed to federal prison in NY

(07/28/03) NORWALK - Paul Pinto, the government's star witness against former Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim, now knows where he'll serve his sentence. Pinto will spend the next two years at the federal prison in Otisville, New York, just 90 miles from his Easton home.

Pinto's lawyer says the site was his client's first choice and the proximity to home was important to his family. Otisville is located in Orange County, New York near Port Jervis. Pinto and his lawyer, H- James Pickerstein, were reportedly notified of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons' decision last week.

Pinto was sentenced July 10 for his role in the corruption scandal that drew a nine-year sentence for Ganim following his March 19 conviction on numerous counts of racketeering, extortion and bribery.

Pinto must turn himself in to authorities September 19.
