Loose framework reached for budget deal

(07/25/03) HARTFORD - State lawmakers say they have a loose framework for a possible budget agreement after meeting until the early hours of Friday morning. However, no final deal has been sealed.

Lawmakers say Republican Governor John Rowland's staff and the Democratically-controlled Legislature's fiscal office need to crunch some numbers to see if everything works. Lawmakers plan to present the plan to their rank and file members on Monday.

Republicans and Democrats have been about $100 million apart from reaching a budget deal. The current fiscal year has about a $1 billion deficit.

The state has been without a budget for four weeks. Governor Rowland has been running the state using weekly executive orders.
