Millstone to perform corrosion test
(07/20/03) WATERFORD - Officials at Millstone nuclear power plant are planning an inspection of a reactor vessel. A plant in South Carolina that has a similar design had a problem with corrosion.
The inspection will be done during refueling in October. It will be the first time since Millstone 2 was built in the 1970s that engineers have inspected the metal on the reactor vessel head.
The process will require workers to remove asbestos insulation. Millstone spokesman Pete Hyde says there isn't any indication of a problem, but the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is ordering the inspection.
The commission wants to make sure the facility is not at risk for corrosion.
