Layoffs hit long-time Bridgeport company
(07/18/03) BRIDGEPORT - In a sign of the times, manufacturing jobs continue to move out of cities like Bridgeport. Friday the long-standing Parallax Company let go of another 70 employees. Parallax (formerly Magnetek) develops, manufactures and markets electronic components used in products built by other companies.
The company, which has been in Bridgeport for nearly 100 years, has slowly laid off its employees over the past few weeks. The plant manager claims the company is simply moving product line up to its facility in Massachusetts and around 50 employees will continue to work at the Bridgeport facility indefinitely.
Many of those who were let go are quite angry, specifically because of its employee severance package. For every year of work, employees get one day's pay. The former employees are members of the Teamster's Union, but they claim the union does nothing.
The teamsters Local 191 representative was in his office Friday, but did not return News 12 Connecticut's phone calls.
