Ganim learns where he will serve time

(07/16/03) HARTFORD - Former Bridgeport mayor Joe Ganim has elected not to pursue a request to remain out of prison pending his appeal. On Wednesday, Ganim's attorney Richard Meehan said the former mayor would voluntarily turn himself in on September 16.

Authorities have also decided that Ganim will do his time at a Satellite Camp at Fort Dix, New Jersey. It's the same low-security prison where Providence, Rhode Island Mayor Buddy Cianci is incarcerated for similar corruption charges.

The prison houses about 4,000 men in dormitory-style rooms, with bunk beds and desks, but no private bathrooms or televisions.

Meanwhile, Ganim's appeal is in the works. Ganim's appellate attorney Peter Goldberger of Philadelphia tells News 12 Connecticut he will file an appeal notice with the clerk's office by the end of this week.
