State enters third week without budget

(07/14/03) HARTFORD - Governor John Rowland (R-CT) signed his third executive order Monday to keep state government running. The one-week order releases about $234 million, and includes $80 million dollars for nursing homes and $55 million to HMOs. Checks also are being cut for hospitals, though money to help cover uninsured patients will be less than expected.

Speaker of the House Moira Lyons (D-Stamford) says Democrats may consider voting on their own budget proposal this week if they can't reach a deal with Republicans. However, Senate President Kevin Sullivan (D-West Hartford) says Democrats are not ready to present their own budget yet.

The two sides are calling on their professional staffs to find out how far apart they remain. Then they plan to meet Tuesday to see where they go from here.
