Newton man swims 16 miles for charity

(07/13/03) WESTPORT - A man in Newton is using his lifelong passion to help others. Jim Bayles plunged into the waters off Compo Beach in Westport early Sunday morning for a 16-mile charity swim.

Bayles left just after 9 a.m. where his final destination would be Port Jefferson, Long Island. Each stroke he took helped raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Connecticut.

Bayles, 51, is making the long swim in honor of his daughter who has epilepsy and struggles with the disease every day.

Sunday was Bayles' 10th swim for charity, his third in the fight against epilepsy.
