Officials dismiss cancer cluster theory

(02/04/03) WOODBRIDGE - A four-month study by the state health department says there is no link between cancer cases and a school building in the Amity Regional School District. It was late October when health officials began reviewing dozens of cases of cancer among students and staff members at Amity Senior High School along with Orange and Bethany junior high schools.

There are five reasons behind the health department's conclusion. Several types of cancer were found; health officials considered the cases among all those cancer diagnoses in a 30-year period; cases were diagnosed at ages associated with the type of cancer found; a rare type of cancer was not found; and finally the cases were associated with several schools.

While many people News 12 Connecticut spoke with say they are relieved to learn there is no link between the school building and the cancer cases, they still wonder if something else in this region made people sick.
