A new rabbi in Westport says he aims to reach people both spiritually and musically.
Rabbi Greg Wall, the new rabbi at the Beit Chaverim Synagogue in Westport, calls himself "the most unorthodox Orthodox rabbi you'll ever meet." Wall is an accomplished saxophonist and has been a professional jazz musician since he was in college. He says he was introduced to Judaism after meeting other Orthodox Jewish musicians.
Wall, also known as the "Jazz Rabbi," started the group Hasidic New Wave with a friend in the 1990s. The group recorded five albums and was associated with the Knitting Factory club in New York City.
Wall now performs locally at the Spotted Horse restaurant in Westport, where he can be heard every Sunday in June. He says his goal is simply to connect with other people.
