What's Ailing You: Excessive heat

This week, News 12 Connecticut's What's Ailing You looks at the dangers of young athletes training outdoors in excessive heat.
With young athletes running around in the heat with heavy athletic padding, they're sweating and losing a lot of electrolytes and water.
203 Urgent Care's Dr. Sonia Bisaccia says having cold water on hand when doing outdoor sports in the summer is a medical necessity. She says having cold water can prevent potentially deadly exertional heat stroke.
Exertional heat stroke can occur when overheated athletes get hit with hyperthermia and the central nervous system shuts down.
Dr. Bisaccia also says heat exhaustion can happen while a person is still sweating. She also says someone who has already stopped sweating and feels ill is at very high risk and should call 911.
