The family of a Bridgeport man critically injured when he was struck by a car is hoping to get him special care to help with his difficult recovery.

Andres Nunez, 38, was crossing at the corner of State Street and Iranistan Avenue to get pizza with his friends back in February when police say a BMW SUV struck him.

Doctors initially gave Nunez a 5 percent chance of survival, but his father Dave Hawkins says his condition has improved, though he is unable to walk and can only speak a few words at a time. His family is trying to raise money to get Nunez to a special hospital in Ohio, where his mother lives, so he can get long-term specialized care.

Police say the driver who hit Nunez was driving with a suspended license. Nunez's family says they have also not received any money from his policy yet, as he was uninsured.
