A homeless shelter in Norwalk started a major project Friday.

Open Door Shelter on Merritt Street is renovating its kitchen, where some 170,000 hot meals are served a year.

International kitchen designer Christopher Peacock, of Wilton, is the driving force behind the makeover. He says he got involved with the project when he realized how much the shelter provides and how out-of-date the kitchen was.

In less than a week, the shelter will have a brand new kitchen that they say will make a world of a difference.

Peacock estimates the project will cost about $25,000, but everything is being donated.

The shelter has made other arrangements to provide meals until the renovation is complete.
