Get Healthy Connecticut encourages locals to shop at farmers markets
Members of the regional health coalition Get Healthy Connecticut say they are encouraging people to take full advantage of fresh fruits and veggies grown right here in our area.
Members say it is the peak season for most summer crops, so residents will find plenty of fresh produce at markets like Bridgeport/Downtown Farmers Market at McLevy Green.
They say buying local has many benefits. Since local produce travels fewer miles to get to your plate, it will not only taste better but it is fresher and more nutritious.
Coalition members say buying local also connects customers to the farmers who grow their food. It is also great to teach children healthy eating habits at a young age.
Members say there are six farmers markets open in Bridgeport on different days of the week.
