Corruption trial begins for ex-state Sen. Newton

Testimony began Tuesday in the trial of former Bridgeport state Sen. Ernie Newton.

As previously reported, Newton is accused of submitting fake documentation in order to qualify for $80,000 in public financing during his failed 2012 re-election bid.

Newton pleaded not guilty to charges that include first-degree larceny.

The former senator was convicted of extortion and campaign finance felonies in 2005.
