Westport police chase ends with crash, 2 officers hurt
A police chase Wednesday morning in Westport ended with a crash and two officers hurt.
Authorities say the ordeal began at the Opticare on Post Road East. They received a call reporting that a man in the store was behaving abnormally.
Police soon learned the man had allegedly stolen a pair of glasses. When they arrived at the plaza, they say the man got into a car and sped away.
The suspect began to travel into the downtown area, at which time the pursuit was terminated as it was deemed too dangerous. The car wound up crashing on Imperial Avenue, near the Saugatuck River.
Police say the suspect exited the vehicle and began running southbound on Imperial Avenue, before fighting with pursuing officers. Investigators say two officers were hurt in the melee, but have been treated and released.
Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Tracy Edwards, of Bridgeport. They believe he may have been under the influence of drugs at the time. Results of a toxicology report are pending.
Edwards is charged with larceny, assaulting an officer and possessing hallucinogens, among other offenses. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
