5K held in memory of Milford softball player

Milford residents gathered for a 5K in memory of a 19-year-old softball player who died from an inoperable brain tumor last month.

Funds from the Dash for Danni 5K will go toward cancer research, in honor of Danni Kemp.

Kemp was playing softball last July when she was hit in the head by a pitch. Her suspected concussion symptoms led to a diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor.

Kemp's father says the community support is his family's backbone.

Organizers of the event say the 3.1-mile course starts at Joseph A. Foran High School because it is where she played softball before graduating in 2015.

Kemp went on to play Division 1 softball for Stony Brook University.

Runners say the endurance they needed to finish the race was encouraged by Kemp's determination to keep fighting until the end.

People who loved Kemp are still grieving for their loss but say they are happy knowing her memory will live on and help others.
