Stamford firefighter set to compete in charity stair climb

A Stamford firefighter is not only hard at work fighting fires, but also training for a special upcoming charity event.

Al Hagander is among hundreds of firefighters from across the nation expected to take part in a charity stair climb. The catch--he will be in full gear when he participates.

Hagander says his inspiration is the daughter of one of his friends who lost her battle with cancer.

"Little kids are special, just have fun in life," says Hagander. "For her to get taken so young is just not fair. It makes me train harder."

The participants will be climbing more than 100 flights of stairs in New York City's Penn Plaza. Hagander hopes to repeat his first-place finish from last year.
