State police: Dead baby found in bag in Harwinton reservoir

A dead baby was found in a bag at Bristol Reservoir Number 4 in Harwinton Tuesday morning, according to state police.

The city of Bristol Water Department, which maintains the reservoir, says employees were performing weekly maintenance work when the discovery was made around 10:40 a.m.

The state police dive team is searching for more evidence as to how the baby ended up there. The chief medical examiner will also be investigating the baby's cause of death, how long the baby was in the water and how old the infant was.

"Just the disregard for life is shocking to me," said Harwinton First Selectman Michael Criss. "This kind of stuff doesn't happen in Harwinton."

Bristol's Water Department told News 12 that they immediately called the state Department of Health after the baby was found. They say the baby was found in untreated waters and that the reservoir has been offline the past few days due to an ongoing drought.

They say they are confident the public water supply is safe. However, the reservoir will remain offline for an indefinite period of time.
