Bridgeport Italian nonprofit raises money for food pantry

A local Italian nonprofit group raised hundreds of dollars for a food pantry after the feeding the underprivileged in the city Monday.

The Bridgeport Area Cultural Italian Organization, or BACIO, held the luncheon known as "St. Joseph's Table" at St. Margaret Shrine in Bridgeport.

Former Bridgeport Mayor Len Paoletta says it honors Saint Joseph, who is believed to have helped the people of Sicily during a drought in the middle ages.

"When nothing was working for the people of Sicily, they made a vow that Saint Joseph would bring them rain, they would forever remember it and honor his memory and efforts by feeding the poor people of that area," says Paoletta.

Organizers say those who could afford it made a donation and they raised more than $700.
