Police release photos of New Canaan mail thieves

New Canaan police are searching for two men suspected of stealing from mailboxes.

Authorities released photos of the suspects, who are described as middle-aged black men driving a black Dodge Charger.

Police say around 12:20 p.m. Friday, the two stole letters from mailboxes on Weed Street.

Investigators say they were last seen on Elm Street dumping mail from the car. Police say one of the suspects went into a TD Bank and cashed a check. It was not immediately clear if that check was stolen.

Neighbors told News 12 that the incidents cause fears of identity theft. Financial experts say Connecticut has the second-highest rate of identity theft complaints nationwide.

Officials are advising residents to be especially careful not to leave mail in their mailboxes overnight.

United States Postal Inspectors are investigating the case, but they are directing anyone with information about the incidents to call New Canaan police.
