Stamford PD seeks info after purse thief targets woman walking alone

Stamford police want the public's help to find a purse thief.

The theft happened Monday afternoon to a woman walking alone on Dock Street. Police say the suspect came up from behind the woman, bumped her and ripped the purse off her shoulder.

The victim told police that the suspect grabbed the purse, which had a couple hundred dollars and some credit cards in it, and then took off on Pacific Street.

Police are looking at surveillance video in the area. They are reminding people to be aware of their surroundings.

"A lot of people get caught up in their cellphones and thinking about what they're going to do next," says Sgt. Chris Tiandicarlo. "If you know your surroundings when you're going and coming, you're less likely to be a victim."

Police describe the suspect as a younger black male, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a light-colored sweatshirt and dark-colored jeans.
