Police: Accomplice in Jan. shooting charged with attempted murder

A second teen has been charged in the near-fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man in January, police say.

Police say Onaje Smith, 18, has now been charged alongside Tyriek Gantt, 19, with attempted murder after already being held on other charges.

They say the two shot a young man in the head at West Main Convenience in January and nearly killed him. News 12 is told Smith and Gantt are also responsible for several armed robberies and shootings in Stamford, Bridgeport and Norwalk in January.

"The culmination of them, the terror they wreaked upon Fairfield County was extravagant," says Lt. Tom Barcello, of the Stamford Police Department. "And to have them in custody and then to serve more warrants on them is very satisfying for all of us."

Smith and Gantt are being held on a $1 million bond, and police say they still may be facing more charges.
