Companies can legally pay women less than men for the same work, according to a federal appeals court.

The ruling cites differences in the employees' previous salaries.

The decision overturns a lower-court ruling saying pay differences based exclusively on prior salaries were discriminatory.

The panel decided companies can use previous salary information as long as they had a business policy justifying it.
