Residents in Wilton to vote on new budget, possibly expanding town police department building
Residents in Wilton have some big decisions to make starting tonight regarding a number of topics, ranging from a new budget to the town's police department.
The department tells News 12 Connecticut it's in desperate need of more space. They are proposing $1.3 million in funding for an architectural study that would look into expanding its headquarters.
The department opened its doors to the public ahead of the vote for them to get a firsthand look at some of the issues the department is facing.
According to police, the department was built in the 1970s when there was 19 officers. Now they are almost double the number.
Officers say one of the biggest concerns is people who come in to make complaints are just feet away from criminals in the booking area.
“We make sure everyone is safe, but with this set up, threat of liability is present,” says Capt. Robert Cipolla of the Wilton Police Department.
If voted on, the study would look into whether the current station would expand, or if a brand new headquarters would be built. There's also seven other items on the ballot. The town meeting and vote is Tuesday night and Saturday.
