Deep freeze to follow storm's snow and rain

Plunging temperatures are following in the wake of the winter storm that brought snow, ice and rain to New Jersey, and the deep freeze could lead to dangerous, icy conditions.

A winter storm warning was issued for northwestern counties, and flood watches, flash flood watches and coastal flood advisories were also posted for parts of the state. The heavy precipitation could lead to flooding in some spots.

News 12 meteorologists say any leftover icing will transition to rain as the storm system winds down by midday. Temperatures will range from the middle 30's well north and west to upper 40's north and east. But throughout the afternoon, winds will pick up and temperatures will drop rapidly, leading to a "flash freeze." Anything still wet will freeze as nightfall approaches and temperatures drop through the 20s.

Then tonight, bitter cold temperatures set in as readings quickly drop to the single digits and teens. With the winds "feels-like" readings will be around -10 come Monday morning. Skies will be partly cloudy, and anything not frozen will quickly freeze up. Drivers heading out early Monday will need to use caution, as secondary roads and untreated surfaces will likely be very icy.

For Monday, the brutal cold continues for the MLK Jr. Holiday. We can expect a mix of sun and clouds with a gusty NW wind. Highs are around 15 degrees, but with the winds it will feel like -5 to -10 throughout the day. These wind chills pose a threat to exposed skin, so limit your time outdoors.
