Friends and relatives of a teen who police shot and killed in Bridgeport last week attended his funeral Wednesday at Luz de Paz Funeral Home on East Washington Avenue.
According to one mourner, despite the beautiful weather, a cold dark shadow is hanging over the community as a result of the May 9 shooting, which left 15-year-old Jayson Negron dead and his 21-year-old passenger wounded. The teen allegedly drove a car into a Bridgeport police officer who was trying to stop him, prompting another officer to open fire.
News 12 Connecticut spoke with Jayson's sister, Jazmarie Melendez, who says her job today is to express her family's grief, to graciously accept all the condolences pouring in, and to be a voice for justice for Jayson.
"I am thankful that everyone is showing so much support, and I want us to continue to come together as one," she says. "We're all from Bridgeport, all have lost someone, and any way people can relate, it doesn't even mean just from Bridgeport, it's from everywhere, we have to just remember that we have a voice and we have the right to know answers above all else, we do."
State police are handling the investigation into the teen's police-involved death.
