Insurance giant Aetna may move out of Connecticut

Posted: Updated:
HARTFORD -

Insurance company Aetna announced on Wednesday that it is in talks to move its headquarters out of Connecticut.

A spokesperson for the company released a statement saying Aetna is negotiating with several states regarding a headquarters relocation. They say the goal is to broaden the company's access to innovation and talent.

The company has been located in Hartford for more than 160 years.

Gov. Dannel Malloy says Aetna has not notified the state of its plans but said he believes the company will keep the majority of its 5,800 employees in Connecticut, with only some executive jobs being moved.

The governor added the state has offered financial incentives for Aetna to stay, up to and including, matching anything put on the table from a competing state.

The statement says the company is committed to its Hartford-based employees and hopes to finalize its plans by early summer.

The news comes a year after General Electric moved from Fairfield County to Boston, Massachusetts.
