'Miles for Smiles' 5K run held at Joel Barlow H.S. in Redding
Runners were out in Redding Saturday for the "Miles for Smiles" 5K run.
Attendees ran to raise money to help children cope with cancer.
Many at the race knew Mikey Friedman while he battled cancer as a student at Joel Barlow High School. He graduated on top of his class and finished his first year at Harvard before passing away.
The "Miles for Smiles" event was organized by his father, who says Mikey recognized how boring and isolated it can be for kids battling cancer.
Friedman asked for the creation of the nonprofit Mikey's Way from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Over the past seven years, the race has raised money to provide new electronics, such as laptop computers or tablets, to 5,000 children in 43 hospitals around the United States.
Organizers say about 100 people came out to help support the cause. Organizers say they have raised $5,000.
