Milford cracks down on group bicycling

Posted: Updated:
MILFORD -

The Milford Board of Aldermen is cracking down on bicyclists after reports of reckless and dangerous actions by kids and teens.

The board this week unanimously passed the city's first-ever bike riding ordinance, which mirrors a state statute but also allows police to impound bicycles if their riders violate the rules.

The new ordinance came after police received an increasing number of complaints about large groups of young bike riders riding six abreast, zig-zagging through traffic, performing stunts in the middle of the street and playing chicken with pedestrians and drivers. Police say the groups sometimes contain up to 50 individuals.

Under the ordinance, bicyclists can ride no more than two abreast in a single lane, they must bike on the right side of the road and with the flow of traffic.

Bike riders must also obey all the traffic rules that cars do. If a child is caught breaking the rules, their bike will be impounded and a parent will have to pick it up in person.

Police say the goal isn't to fill their impound lot with bikes, but rather to discourage kids from driving dangerously.
