Jury selection is underway in the retrial of a Bridgeport man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend.
It will be the third trial for Jermaine Richards, who was charged in the murder back in 2013. In the previous two trials, the jury deadlocked on a verdict.
"It has been a very hard time for my family and I," says Corrinna Martin, the mother of the victim.
Martin made those comments after the second mistrial in March of last year.
According to police, Richards killed Alyssiah Wiley, 20, of West Haven, then dismembered her body.
Police say they found parts of her body in the woods in Trumbull about a month after she was last seen with Richards outside her dorm at Eastern Connecticut State University. Richards has denied killing Wiley.
Martin told News 12 Connecticut she didn't blame anyone for the mistrial, saying the jury members did their jobs well.
She says she's hopeful her family will get the outcome they want this time around.
One juror was selected last week and the process will resume next week, with 16 jurors total set to be selected. The tentative trial start date is August 2.
