Stratford police: Man stabbed ex-girlfriend multiple times
Stratford police say a New York City man stabbed his ex-girlfriend multiple times.
The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday on Dewey Street.
Police say 19-year-old Nelson Santiago, of Brooklyn, confronted his ex and then stabbed her in the neck, head, face, torso and wrist. Police say they later arrested Santiago as he was trying to flee the scene.
Neighbor Charles Chino Belafante, who lives across the street, says he saw the whole ordeal.
"He rushed her with a knife and started slashing," Belafante says. "She was in undergarments and drenched in blood."
He called 911 after the woman, who's in her 20s, showed up at his door. Police say neighbors likely saved her life.
"They had some concerns, they came out and they were very helpful at the scene," says Stratford Police Capt. Frank Eannotti. "That's what the neighbors are for, you know. They should be looking out for each other, so we do appreciate the assistance."
Police say the victim is in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital.
Santiago was arraigned Tuesday and is being held on $750,000 bond. He is due back in court at the end of the month.
