Takata is adding 2.7 million vehicles from Ford, Nissan and Mazda to those already being recalled to replace potentially dangerous airbag inflators.

The recall affects 2005 through 2012 model years.

Initially thought to be safe, the inflators can explode and spew shrapnel into drivers and passengers.

The issue has resulted in at least 17 deaths and more than 180 injuries.
